Making the best use of herbal remedies

An excerpt from Heath & Heather Book of Herbs, 1955 Edition

May we say quite definitely, at the beginning of these notes, that of all forms of herbal treatment, we firmly believe that the best of all is the herb infusion! Today, everybody is in a tremendous hurry and would rather have pills and tablets in their pocket, or take their treatment in some quick and concentrated form. This is absolutely necessary when travelling and for various other reasons, but in our view and as a result of our long experience, there is no treatment so beneficial as the herb compound or herb simple infused and taken regularly in the liquid form. These herb teas gently and most thoroughly cleanse, relive and bring about the desired improvement. The herbalists of the olden days used this phrase time after time in their writings: ‘… Keep these herbs gently simmering beside the fire, as a cup of the herb tea taken warm will instantly relieve.’ these words are still true, and though the herbs are now blended under more modern conditions, and produced in modern packs they still remain the ‘healing plants’ that they have been from time immemorial. We are convinced that the best results will be obtained by infusing the actual leaves, roots, barks, or such parts of the plant as may have medicinal qualities and we cannot too strongly urge that our customers should prepare their herb remedy in this way.

It is not really difficult! Simmer the quantity for a little time as advised on every packet, strain off and leave in an open jug, very lightly covered. Many customers tell us that make just a cupful at a time, which is done in a few seconds in the evening. The herbs are left to infuse all night and are quite ready to strain and drink next morning. Consider how often a kettle is put on to boil in every kitchen! When the water is boiling, us it to make your HERB tea at the same time as the usual pot of tea, and you will not find this task any trouble.
