― Deborah Day

In our busy and hectic lifestyles, sometimes we forget to take a moment simply for ourselves. Some may feel they don’t have the time, while others may not even realise they’re neglecting themselves. There are many things one can do to do what nowadays is called self-care, and it doesn’t have to be very complicated.  In light of Mental Health Awareness Week, here are some tips that you can fit into your daily life, that will give your Inner-Self the TLC it needs.

Get enough of the right kind of sleep

It is said that our body heals when we sleep, and this is just not when we are sick, but everyday. How we have slept makes a huge difference in how our day is going to be and after a long or stressful day, it is during sleep that our minds take a break.

There are many things we can do to get that perfect night’s sleep:

  • Eat and drink the right things before sleeping, and avoid sugar and caffeine that may keep you up at night.
  • Drink some hot Camomile tea or a Night Time tea to get you into the right mood.
  • Avoid your laptop or phone so that they don’t distract you from sleeping.
  • Listen to some soothing music or nature sounds, like rain.

Keep a healthy lifestyle

“A healthy mind lives in a healthy body”  – English proverb

Having a healthy lifestyle really helps in having a happy lifestyle. Things such as having a balanced diet, avoiding smoking and drugs, and most important of all: taking care of your gut!

An upset stomach if one thing that can ruin your entire day, so be sure to take care of your tummy. Have Fennel tea or an After Dinner Tea, to soothe your stomach after a big meal, and probiotics are always a good way to take care of your gut health daily.

Make Exercise part of your daily routine

It’s never easier to start that first day at the gym. There are many who have a gym membership and haven’t even gone yet. Taking that first step to exercise doesn’t have to be hard or too structured. All it takes is allowing yourself 30 minutes a day to do a physical activity that you enjoy. It could be walking, cycling, or even watch a yoga video and try it at home.

Exercising, even just a little, everyday will improve your sleep and energise your mind. To learn more about how exercise can help your mental health click here.

Get out into the great outdoors…

…and breathe in the fresh air.

Sometimes all one needs is to get outside and enjoy being in nature. Taking a break from the hustle and bustle of our daily lives is essential for us to recharge and get back into the fray.

Visit your local park and sit down with a book, have a picnic with some friends, take a walk through the woods or if you are lucky enough, take some time off and go on a little getaway to spend some time with yourself, and do the things you don’t realise you haven’t done in a while.

If you find yourself in a state of lassitude, your Inner-self needs some TLC

We noticed a lot of these tips were advised by our founders way back in the day, in our old Heath and Heather Famous Book of Herbs, in what they called the ‘Heath and Heather Don’ts’. Looks like they knew exactly what we needed.
