Our Commitment to the Environment

Here at Heath & Heather, we believe it’s not enough that only our tea is green. We also need our actions as a modern-day business, to reflect the care and close-to-nature principles that the brand was founded with back in the early 1900s.

And so, we endeavour to do as much as we can, no matter how big or small the gesture, to protect and support the environment through our “Greenprint for Good” sustainability plan.

“Lack of fresh air and exercise, improper food and hastily snatched meals help to sap the vitality of large numbers of people engaged in sedentary occupations… That is where Herbs come into the picture. Grown in the fresh air and sunshine, they are full of vital properties which can be turned to good account by the human body.”

A century of Heritage and expertise...

Our founder, Samuel Ryder (1858-1936), was born near Preston, Lancashire attending Owen’s College in Manchester after his elder brother James. Samuel left college early and initially began work at a shipping merchant. However, the family were forever inspired by their father’s passion for gardening…

During this era, it became important to grow your own food across farms, gardens and allotments. The Ryder family embraced this movement, wanting to supply seeds by post at affordable prices to the general public.

Samuel Ryder moved South to St Albans due to its good railway connections and postal services, to setup a mail order business selling seeds in ‘penny packets.’

1895

The business, Ryder’s Seeds, began from the garden shed at Samuel Ryder’s home in Folly Lane. With his wife they produced a catalogue which was sent out every Friday night, to be in the hands of working men by Saturday afternoon when they would be enjoying their half day holiday.
